    Thanks for sharing your work with us. I installed the new version, but there is an error when using images on the header. The error in the main page is:

    Warning: imagecreatefromjpeg() [function.imagecreatefromjpeg]: URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in /domains/domain/html/wp-content/themes/magazine-basic/functions.php on line 171

    Thanks again!

  2. Updated some minutes ago, everything seems fine.
    Thank you again for this wonderful theme.

    First let me say thanks so much for a great theme, I really enjoy the look and layout. I just upgraded to the new version and have a couple of issues.

    The category bar at the top seems to work fine on the main page, but on the single post or category view it is completely broken.

    Also on the category view the icons for the stories don’t show up, just the header text is repeated.

    Is there a way to get “older posts” on the main page too, not just on the category page?

    Thanks again for everything! And yes i did do an auto install, then went back and cleared it out and redid it just to make sure i got the same results.

      Well I went in and completely deleted everything, and re uploaded it once again. Now the bar works, but I also lost all my thumbnails. It randomly happened much later, was weird.

    • Joel Galbraith

      I can’t seem to get any front page images/thumbnails to show. No idea what is up, or if this is related to your thumbnail issue.

      #3454
    • Turning off resizer in theme layout settings fixes the front page image problem…and yet it still resizes the images as they cascade down levels…Hmmm.

      #3456
    • Hey Joel,

      There is still a resizer function but it is CSS instead of the actual thumbnail generator. To remove all this, you can open up the layout folder and go to the appropriate file according to what layout you selected, and change the resize() and theme_content() or theme_excerpt() functions to the original the_content() or the_excerpt().

  4. Hey,

    New theme looks great. One problem, however: !–more– tags do not work on the front page. I’ve tried it with old posts and a few new test posts and nothing comes up.

    Any ideas?

    Duncan

  5. I cant’t seem to get the pictures in the front page (index.php to show up). I have given the cache directory rights to write, but still not working.

    #2442
    • Zac

      I never got them to load either. I am not sure what the deal is. I went to the timthumb support area and followed everything there, but no such luck. I am at a loss.

      #2465
    • DITTO, not seeing any images on front page. I really want them, they worked so well in the last version before I upgraded. (test blog linked)

  6. I love this theme – my little neighborhood blog suddenly looks professional and people are really reading and using it! Thank you so much!

    One note – i’m having some issues with categories. If i add the category through the “Add category” button while I’m in a post, it all works. But, if I add a category from teh Category page, then it is really buggy.

    Dont’ know if anyone else is having this issue…

    -julie

    #2444
  7. Sweet! I upgraded, and it looks fantastic. Thanks!

    I’m finding that images hosted on Flickr are showing as broken images on the front page – not sure why thumb.php is having troubles – I get this: “file not found farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3485178214e68abbef8cm.jpg”

    #2445
    • I don’t see an image when I click through to farm4.static.flickr.com/3651/3485178214e68abbef8cm.jpg. Just a “photocache426.flickr.gq1 : 404 “. So that might be your issue.

      #2455
    • something happened to the pasted URL when I added it here – there was a _ in there somewhere. the image works fine when viewed on the normal post page, but the thumb.php code is having trouble getting it for some reason.

  8. I posted a fix over on the old Magazine Basic Page for the Main Navigation Menu. Do know if you want to move the comment over here or not.

    Hi,
    Having the same issue as others above. Getting error message when trying to add a header image. I have tried deleting the img and re-uploading. The error persists… any thoughts.

    Thanks!

    I think I might have posted under the old thread, but one thing to look at is the modsec rules. Seems that HostGator, and a few others have the rules blocked. Here is the support issue for the generator that i am talking about.

  11. Hello, I really like the magazine basic design. when I updated through wordpress, both my logo and home page posts deleted. The articles are still in the system, just missing from the home page. Also, is this theme available without c.bavota/B advertising on it or without “magazine basic theme” listed at the bottom of the page? I didn’t see a pay-for-theme option? thank you.

    #2463
    • Hey Heidi,

      Not too sure why your articles wouldn’t appear. What site are you using it on?

      #2468
    • The articles/images are ok now. Guess I needed to give it a few minutes or something after updating. Any word on a price to have the attributions removed?

      #2474
  12. Hello!!! Thanks!!!!!! Nice and clean interfase!!!!!!!!

    #2464
  13. Version 2.4.4 just uploaded to WordPress.org. Should be available soon.

    #2469
  14. Does not look like the 2.4.4 is awalable? There is still the 2.4.2. Hav you found the problem with the tumbs not loading.. errr.. does not seems to be generated.. the cache-folder is empty..

    #2472
  15. Chris – love my new look with this theme – thanks very much. This is probably really basic but can you tell me what dimensions the logo/header needs to be within in order to fit right with the theme? Thanks for your help.

    #2473
    • Something that is 300 by 100 would probably look best but you can use any sized image you like. You might just have to turn off the header ad though.

      #2484
  16. I very much like this theme. I have only one issue with it. On my homepage, the latest blogs do not show up. All the blogs that do show up are from one author. I cannot figure out how to see the latest blogs displayed on the homepage.
    I am using the latest Wordpress version and the Mag 2.4.4

    #2475
    • That is because you are using the Featured Post widget. That post removes that category from being displayed in the main section, so that you don’t get repeat posts.

      I haven’t yet figured out another way to do it.

      #2485
    • Wow. That did it. Thanks for the information.

      #2488
  17. Sa to say. I still have problems with the tumbnails… The would not show. How can you help me Bavota?

    #2479
    • Hey Anders,

      I wish I could be of more help. Does anything show up when you turn off the Image Resizer? Have you taken a look at the link on the Info page? Who are you hosted through? Have you spoken with them about the whitelisting the proper modsec rules?

      #2486
    • Zac

      I never got the Image Resizer to work either. When I first install the theme it works for the first 3 loads or so, then just stops, really odd. I have the mod_sec rules whitelisted and seems to make no difference. I even changed the version of timthumb to the newest one.

      Without the image resizer is fine, but one thing that changed in 2.4.4 is the picture on the main story is no longer larger with the text under it. I am sure i can edit the files and fix it, but I will probably break it. can you point me in the right direction?

      #2507
    • Hello bavota. I turned the resizing off, so everything is good now.

      Zac: I can’t get what you meen, but I think you should look in the optionX.php file you are using and look for resize (200,200). You can then change the size of the picture in the front page.

    I had some images that did not show as thumbnails but just replacing them did the trick.

    QUESTION:
    At the bottom of the page appears the phrase:
    Buy This Bicycle! and a broken link to an image
    Is this some promotional to your site Bavota?
    I would not care if it is, but can I fix the link to the image of the bike?

    Saludos from Mexico City

    #2481
    • That bicycle ad looks like spam to me. You might have a plugin that is doing that. If not, maybe someone has gone in and added some code there. But that is definitely not mine.

      #2487
    • WOW I am goung to elimitate it!!

  19. For each category, is it possible to upload a picture that would represent the category and be displayed each time a post is added to signal that the post is in a particular category?

    Also, is it possible to add a feature that would change the background color from white to a few other possibilities?

    #2489
    • Hey Mark,

      Anything is possible but that category idea is a little specific to be offered as a feature.

      You can change the colour in style.css if you want. Look for the body tag near the top and add:

      background: #cc0000;

      Replace cc0000 with the hex value of the colour you want.

      A colour feature may appear in the future.

      #2511
  20. Thank you.. :D It finaly works.

    The checkbox for Image Resize turned off did it for me. So thanks alot. I have an idé for the sicky post. I would like to see the sticky post i black or another color.

    I also am looking in your code in the option2.php and it looks like there is someting wrong, the layout does move the third post in twocol to the right, and the rest does not look good.

    It would be nice to be able to add modules in the front page, like one single on the top, 2 in the next row, mabye 2 more in the third row, then 3 posts. and so on. If you are going to do this, it also should be posible to add ads aswell, like it was bouild on widgets.

    You should make the headerad workable with javascript and other adservers..

    #2490
    • Hey Anders,

      I like what you’ve done with your site. It looks awesome. That is a good idea for the ad space in the header.

      I don’t know what the issue is with option2.php. Do you have a testing environment that I can take a look at?

      #2512
    • No. Sorry I don’t. But I have found a way to do it different. I added clear:both in the twopost1 and 3;, and float right in twopost2 and 4. I did it for me.

      #2518
    • Anders – where is the checkbox for image resize? I just realized some of my thumbnails are not showing up…

      Thanks.

    I’m trying to get the layout from the cover picture, the first one there on the post. With the posts on the left and in the center. But i can’t get my posts to be split between both columns, do i need a plugin for this??

  23. Thanks for this theme – perhaps a ridiculous question but I’m creating a family of sites and wonder how I can change the color schemes – i.e. have green, blue, red versions. Thanks for your thoughts in advance.

    Andrew

    #2502
    • Hey Andrew,

      You have the power to change colours within the style.css file. Are you familiar with CSS? If not, there are tons of great tutorials online to help you out.

      #2515
  24. Hi, thank you for the good theme. There are next problems:

    A problem of the inlaid categories is in IE6
    (_http://domain.xx/category/xxx/xxx/page)
    No support of pagenavi plagin
    In a main page the text formatting disappears, in ather pages also
    It is desirable to have other colours at choice

    #2504
  25. How can I disable the older and newer entries function in the frontpage?

    #2509
  26. Hey. Just a quick suggestion. The ‘add an ad’ option in the Header section could be improved if you were allowed to place HTML code straight in, like you’ve done with the Analytics code on the SEO page. Just a thought.

    This new version is still pretty damned excellent though.

    SIDEBAR PROBLEM

    I’m using the 1024, ver. 2.4.2 – two sidebar option.
    On the main/front blog page the right-hand sidebar has also mysteriously appeared on the left-hand side (below the left-hand sidebar widgets I have selected). In Appearance-Widgets under sidebar one, only the two widgets I have choosen are actually listed, so I am unable to delete the extra widgets. I checked the sidebar.php just to see if these extra weidgets where there. They were, so I deleted them thinking they would disappear. They have not and are still there. Can you advise me as to specificly where these weidgets that have not been selected, (but are displaying on the main blog page) for the left-hand sidebar (sidebar one) are stored. Perhaps I can delete them directly. Is this a known problem? Your advise would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  28. I just downloaded version 2.4.4 and my front page got all wiggy. Is there somewhere I can (re)download 2.4.2? Thanks, CB

    #2520
    • Around line 466 in the style.css, try to edit the code there to:

      print(".twopost {
      width: 46%;
      border-top: 1px solid #aaa;
      }

      .twopost1, .twopost3 {
      float: left;
      clear: both;
      padding-top: 5px;
      }

      .twopost2, .twopost4 {
      float: right;
      padding-top: 5px;
      }

      .twopost1, .twopost2 {
      border-top: 0;
      padding-top: 0px;
      }

      “);

      #2525
    • some extra code there.. print (” and “); is not going to be put in the css-file.. Just this under here..

      .twopost {
      width: 228px;
      border-top: 1px solid #aaa;
      }

      .twopost1, .twopost3 {
      float: left;
      clear: both;
      padding-top: 5px;
      }

      .twopost2, .twopost4 {
      float: right;
      padding-top: 5px;
      }

      .twopost1, .twopost2 {
      border-top: 0;
      padding-top: 0px;
      }

    Hi there! You’re da man! Love your work and attention to detail :)

    Now for the silly question that probably isn’t going to get an answer, either because it’s impossible, either because it is just too complicated… Here we go:

    How in the world can I combine both the categories and pages in the upper menu (the one in black, that currently only holds the categories)?

    You see? I told you it was way too stupid of a question :/

    Anyhow, keep up the good work! I love what you’ve done. Btw, great config options!

    @Anders: B. s right dude. That’s a really good looking header… Mind if I borrow your idea? ;)

    #2522
  30. Hi Chris,

    I just uploaded my new header but there’s a bunch of white space in between it and the category bars. Is there a way to get rid of this? Thanks for your help.

  31. I had the older version of this theme and just uploaded the new one and now my site wont work, It says ‘failed to open the page’ is there a bug in it or something? Even when i try to upload the old one it still wont work. PLEASE HELP!!

  32. Here is al litle hack for you guys how wants the title under the picture.

    Replace the content in the class storycontent in the option file you are using with this code. Remember to comment out the original title tag.

    <div class="storycontent">
    <?php if(get_option('uwc_excerpt_content') == 'content') {
    resize(200,200);
    echo('<h1><a href="');
    the_permalink();
    echo ('">');
    the_title();
    echo('</a></h1>');
    theme_content('(more)');

    } else {
    resize(200,200);
    echo('<h1><a href="');
    the_permalink();
    echo ('">');
    the_title();
    echo('</a></h1>');
    theme_excerpt(get_option('uwc_excerpt_one'));
    }
    ?>
    </div>

    Thank you, a really nice template!

    A question: Is it possible to set the sidebar width to 270px in an easy way?

    #2541
    • You have to edit the style.php. I have done it, but it took me a litle bit to get it right.

      #2544
    • Edi

      Thank you for the hint! I tried it with the database entry and this didn’t work.

      #2561
    • Hey all,

      Certain style elements that have options in the backend are controlled by the style.php file. That is because certain styles change due to selections you make. Changing the sidebar width means you need to change the main content width as well.

    Will Adsense run on this theme?

    #2542
  35. Hey,

    Pop quiz: does anyone know how to change the colour on the Category bar? It should be easy, but then I’m an idiot. Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Duncan

    #2546
    • In style.css, change “background: url(images/nav.png) repeat;” to “background-color: #*“, where * is the variable for the color in hex.

      #2550
    • Hi Anders,

      Thanks!

      Duncan

      #2553
    • Hello Duncan.

      You have a good site there.. You can use the Advertising Manager to run you adverts. There is a function in the widget to turn the of the widget styling.

      #2559
    • Hey, Thanks! I didn’t realise you could do that. I’ve been looking at your website and it makes me wish I could speak Norwegian. How did you get your pictures further down the frontpage to not shrink?

      Duncan

      #2577
    • In the folder layout,edit the option2.php. Change “resize(200,200);” to your needs. If you see futher down, 200,200 is 50,50 or 100,100. If you change these to 200, 200 or even more than that, you will se the changes in your site. You have to adjust to your own needs..

      #2582
    • Hmm, the ‘layout’ folder on the Wordpress Dashboard, or in the Theme Editor, because I can’t seem to find Option2.php in either.

      #2585
  36. Brian

    Is there a way to NOT resize the images/content on the single post page? It seems to be condensing the width of my pictures without affecting the height, leading to distorted images. I’d rather have images bleed into the sidebars than have this.

    #2562
    • Brian: There is no resize in the single.php file. but have you checked that you don’t resize the picture when you making the post?

      If you had a link to your site, it would be better to understand what you mean..

      #2564
    • Hey Brian,

      I have set a max-width so that images don’t run off the page. You can solve this by making sure your medium size images under the Settings => Media page is set to probably around 500px by 500px. To be certain, look at your source code and find the style for #leftcontent img which is before the <head> tag near the top. The value for max-width is what you should set you medium size image to. Then always use the medium size image when you want it to display to the full width of your post.

      #2575
  37. Again thanks for the great theme. I have done a bit of my own editing to it – mainly changing sizes around for optimal viewing in 1024. One problem I am having though is the following:

    I am using the Tabbed Widgets Plugin to put a tabbed widget on the left side of the front page. However, when it calls the tabbed widget it is giving the styling of .side-widget to each thing thus “breaking” the layout. Is there something I need to be changing to get it not to inherit like this? (It might be just the way the widget works.) Any help would be great.
    View it here Techie Tantrum

    Also if anyone is interested I made the page that shows the individually posts a little different. I set it to remove one sidebar and leave the other up. This gives a nice wide viewing area for people viewing your content, plus it also gives a degree of separation from the front page to other pages. I also plan on adding a widget ready area in the footer that breaks down into four separate widgetized ares. If anyone else is curious in about adding this let me know and I can post the code when im done.

    #2565
    • Hey Levi,

      All widgets have that styling due to how WordPress works. I set that up in functions.php and it applies it to every widget. If it didn’t do it this way, then every widget would look different. I don’t really know how to solve it though with that particular widget.

      #2576
    • Thank you for your response. I will let you know if I find a fix for this. It is becoming a bit frustrating as nothing appears to work and the plugin developer isn’t responding to me. Again thanks for your great theme!

      I’d love to hear how you set up internal pages to only use one sidebar. Can you post the instructions?

      #5697
  38. Hello Chris,
    This updated version is really great and I love the new font size and style at the nav bar. I have few questions here Chris hoping for your help to solve this:
    1. How can I put the “Search Bar”.This version don’t display search bar at the header.
    2. I tried to upload a header image through the magazine besic header option but the “Upload” button is not visible. How can I upload my header here?
    Thank you,
    Dexter

    #2581
    • I removed the search bar because most people requested an ad instead, and you can easily add a search widget to the sidebar.

      I have updated the theme to version 2.4.6 which should fix the header install issue.

      #2651
    • please add back the search bar!

      #2873
    • I know you can’t cover everyone’s preferences, but I’m going to have to vote for the search bar as well… having one in the widget is not as clean of a location as the upper right header. Great theme nonetheless!

      #3714
  39. Hi

    Thanks for this excellent theme. I’m still getting to know WordPress on a local server, but I hope to upload to my web server soon.

    By the way, I notice that you announce version 2.4.5 at the top of this page, but Wordpress.org still has version 2.4.4. Is there an error somewhere?

    #2584
  40. i have installed this theme, but only downside is when i use my local langugae two lines are over lapping. not sure how to solve this issue.
    and where can i change the front page to a static page?

    #2586
    • You can change the front page to a static page through the WordPress admin menu. Go to Settings => Reading. There are options there and a link for instructions.

      Not too sure what the other issue is. I would have to see the problem.

      #2653
  41. I’m a beginner with the whole Word Press thing. Just updated from Mag Basic 2.3.3 to 2.4.4. Now this shows at the top of the page:

    Warning: getimagesize() [function.getimagesize]: URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration in D:\Hosting\2457522\html\wp-content\themes\magazine-basic\functions.php on line 177

    Warning: getimagesize(http://cyafedhock.com/wp-content/themes/magazine-basic/uploads/cyatitle2.jpg) [function.getimagesize]: failed to open stream: no suitable wrapper could be found in D:\Hosting\2457522\html\wp-content\themes\magazine-basic\functions.php on line 177

    I messed with the Image Resize settings, but it doesn’t seem to affect this. Any idea what I need to do to fix this? (In beginners terms please!)

    Thanks!

    #2598
    • I love this theme, but am really frustrated after wrestling with it for two days.

      I finally got the Image Resize thing to work, but it hasn’t solved the code problem. I called my hosting service, but they didn’t seem to be able to help. I notice that this problem was reported in an earlier version of the theme, but that this version was supposed to have fixed it. I completely deleted and redownloaded the theme and renamed the heading image. I even tried to comment out some of the code – all to no avail.

      Is anyone else having this problem or have they had this problem and figured out how to fix it?

    • Hey Connie,

      The problem this occurs is because of your server. I call a PHP function that is either not installed on your server or it is not installed properly. The code is suppose to ignore the function if it doesn’t exist but it seems to exist but not function properly. I keep changing things here to fix that but it doesn’t seem to be working on every server configuration. In the end I might just have to remove the feature and make people add some manual info.

    Nav bar link to external page?
    I have several WP Pages on a navbar and want to add just one more link (‘Forum’) that is not a WP Page but an external page. I don’t want it elsewhere on the page or the sidebar, I want it right there on the nav bar just like “HOME”.

    I don’t see any way to add an external page through WP Admin. Am I missing something obvious?
    Thanks and great theme!!! The Best for WP!

    • You need to add that to the header.php file. Look for line #89:

      <li><a href="<?php bloginfo('url'); ?>">Home</a></li>

      Create a similar piece of code. Replace the href link to the link you want and replace Home with whatever you want there. Then paste your new code before the closing </ul> on line #95.

  45. Hi Chris & Friends,

    Many thanks for the great theme updates and the helpful advice.

    With the image resizer activated and the excepts limit of 55 words, there is a a lot of white space in the first row of the front page.

    Allowing up to 100 words for the first row would solve this issue.
    How can that be done without messing up the theme?

    Cheers,

    ALAM

    • Hey,

      I had this problem too. Wordpress don’t allow excerpts more than 55 words. One way around this is to simply use <!--more--> tags, then select ‘conent’ not ‘excerpt’ in the settings.

      That’s what I do on my website. There might be a hack, but this way is much simpler.

  46. I love this theme. It has a lot of great features and looks great.

    The issue I have is that the blog title seems to cut off the very top and bottom of my text. For instance, on the page, a “Q” looks like an “O” as the tail is cut off. Lower case “i” has a slighly cut off dot at the top.

    I have no html experience, but figure that one of the files will expand that to allow for the text to fit. I haven’t changed anything and only used the wordpress settings to enter the title.

    I have prior programming experience, so I think if you let me know which file and roughly what to look for, I can figure it out.

    Also, the subscribe link posts a sceen with code. Is that because I don’t have an RSS reader installed? If not, how do I fix that?

    Thanks for the help!

    • Hey smrtas1,

      I blame that on your browser. Are you using IE6? If so, upgrade to Firefox 3.0. All your problems will be solved.

    Hi
    Thanx for a very nice theme.

    Is it possible to integrate a plotoblog into this theme? I have been searching and it seems that it ain’t possible without changing the theme.

    I was wondering that it might be done with a plugin solution.
    Does anybody have experience with this?

    Marcelo

    Is there a way to get the main post to revert back to the old way, with the larger picture and text under it? I have resizer off (never could get it to work). The new way throws off the page look considerably. I am sure it is a simple CSS hack, i just don’t know what i am doing.

    Thanks guys.

    • Hey Zac,

      Looks like you are using option3.php. That file in in the layout folder. Open it up and look for resize(200,200); around line #12 and #15. This is for the first post on your front page. Change the first variable to whatever width you would like. The second variable (height) only works with the Image Resizer.

    • Hi, Once again me. I fixed the problem. When I first installed the new WordPress 2.7.1, I had some problems, “unable to connect with database error”, the only quick solution I found was to install an older WordPress version (2.6) that´s when I had problems with your theme. After some tricks I could install WordPrfess 2.7.1 and the problems go away. Now I will enjoy blogging with your amazing theme. Thanks for your great support!
